The itinerary, hour by hour

Every day is built around golden hour and blue hour. We shoot early, rest and back-up at midday, and chase the last light every evening.

1
Tunxi

Arrival & Hui old street at blue hour

Your guide meets you at Huangshan Tunxi Airport or the high-speed station. Tunxi old street is a living Song-dynasty trading street of white walls, grey tiles and dark timber shopfronts — the perfect place to start a Huangshan trip at ground level.

We shoot the last hour of daylight in the lanes, then stay through blue hour as the lanterns come on and the shopfronts glow. It is an easy, forgiving session after travelling, and it sets up the contrast with the granite world we climb into tomorrow.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 15:00  —  Airport / station pick-up, check-in and gear check
  • 17:30–18:50  —  Old street lanes in warm light (ISO 200–400, f/4–5.6)
  • 18:50–19:50  —  Blue-hour lanterns and shopfronts (ISO 800–3200, f/1.8–2.8, 1/30–1/60s)

The Welcome Pine & Paiyun Pavilion sunset

An early transfer to the cable car, then up into the granite world of Huangshan. We walk in via the eastern steps with the pack carried ahead, so the cameras stay in your hands rather than on your back.

Late morning is for the Welcome Pine — the tree that has grown out of the rock for eight hundred years and appears in almost every Chinese living room. The light is best when the mist moves through the valley behind it. We close the day at Paiyun Pavilion as the West Sea cloud ocean turns gold.

  • 08:30  —  Transfer to the cable car; ascend to the summit
  • 10:30–12:00  —  Welcome Pine with drifting mist (ISO 200–400, f/8, 1/30–1/4s)
  • 16:30–19:00  —  Paiyun Pavilion — West Sea cloud sea at sunset (ISO 100–200, f/8–11)

3
Begin-to-Believe Peak

Sunrise above the cloud sea

A pre-dawn walk in the dark to Begin-to-Believe Peak, the classic sunrise platform, where the granite spires stand out of the cloud as the light arrives. The name comes from the effect: you have to see it to believe it.

After breakfast we drop into the West Sea Grand Canyon, where the trail runs along the cliff with the pillar tops below you — the most dramatic walking on the mountain. The afternoon is for the quieter platforms and a rest before tomorrow's last dawn.

4
Bright Summit

Qingliang Terrace dawn, stars & blue hour

Qingliang Terrace faces north-east and gives the widest dawn view on the mountain: a long, layered skyline of peaks with cloud filling the valleys between. It is the frame the classical painters were working from.

The afternoon is free — rest, edit, or revisit a spot you want another go at. After dark we return to Bright Summit for blue hour and, if the sky is clear, the Milky Way above 1,860 metres. This is the night session of the trip.

  • 05:10–07:00  —  Qingliang Terrace dawn (ISO 200–400, f/8, 1/15–2s)
  • 10:00–15:00  —  Rest, back-up and an edit session
  • 18:30–19:30  —  Bright Summit blue hour (ISO 400–1600, f/2.8–5.6)
  • 20:00–21:30  —  Optional Milky Way (ISO 3200, f/2.8, 20s)

5
Hongcun

Moon Pond at dawn & departure

One last summit dawn for those who want it, then the descent and a short transfer to Hongcun, the UNESCO-listed Hui village at the foot of the mountain. We arrive in time to walk the lanes as evening light turns the white walls warm.

The next morning we are at Moon Pond before breakfast — the half-moon pool with its white-walled houses reflected in still water, and the classic image of the Huizhou villages. Then the edit session and your transfer to the airport or station.

  • 06:00–07:15  —  Optional final summit dawn
  • 15:00  —  Descend and transfer to Hongcun
  • 17:30–19:00  —  Hongcun lanes at golden hour
  • Next morning 06:30–08:00  —  Moon Pond at dawn (ISO 100–400, f/8, 1/30–1/4s) then edit session & transfer

Camera Settings Guide

Settings we use in Huangshan

Starting points for each light condition — your guide adjusts them on location and explains every change.

Pines & mist
ISO 200–400 · f/8 · 1/30–1/4s

Mist moves fast — pre-compose and wait for the gap. Use a mid-telephoto to isolate a single pine against the white valley behind it.

🌅
Cloud sea at sunset
ISO 100–200 · f/8–11 · 1/125–1/250s

The cloud holds colour long after the peaks go dark. Bracket: the range between the glowing cloud and the black rock is extreme.

Winter snow rime
ISO 100 · f/8 · 1/250s · +1 to +1.7 EV

Snow always fools the meter into underexposing. Add over a stop, and use the rime on the pines as the highlight texture in the frame.

ISO 3200 · f/2.8 · 20s

Manual focus on a bright star, remote release, and keep a torch handy to paint a foreground rock. Shoot before moonrise.
