More than three thousand sandstone pillars stand in the Wulingyuan valley — the landscape that inspired the floating mountains of Avatar.

Zhangjiajie rewards the photographer who arrives before the cable cars and stays after the tour buses leave. We shoot Yuanjiajie and Tianzi at first light when mist still fills the canyon, work the forest trails through midday, then close the day at Tianmen or the glass bridge as the light turns.
