Guilin · Lishui River

Arrival in Guilin & Lishui River dusk

Your photographer-guide meets you at Guilin Liangjiang Airport or the high-speed rail station with a name board. A 40-minute transfer drops you at a centrally located hotel a short walk from the Lishui riverbank — close enough that we can be shooting within the hour if your flight is on time. After check-in and a quick gear check over a bowl of Guilin rice noodles, we walk the river to read the light.

This first evening is deliberately gentle. The karst hills that ring the city catch the last warm light and double in the water; by blue hour the bridges and towers switch on and the river turns into sheets of coloured reflection. It is a soft landing into Guilin — and the moment to calibrate your exposures, white balance and long-exposure technique before the pre-dawn starts begin.

Xianggong Hill → Xingping

Sunrise over the Li River bend

A 04:20 alarm and a 90-minute drive put us at the foot of Xianggong Hill while the valley is still black. The twenty-minute climb up the stepped path is the price of the most famous frame in Guangxi: first light spilling across a horseshoe bend of the Li River, layer upon layer of karst fading into blue haze behind it.

We hold the terrace through the whole forty-minute window — wide for the complete panorama, then a 70–200mm to compress the repeating ridges and isolate the bamboo rafts as they drift into the golden streak. Breakfast afterwards in Xingping, then the afternoon is deliberately slow: riverside lanes, the 20-yuan viewpoint and raft detail while the light is hard and unflattering.

Yangshuo · Yulong River

Dawn mist & cormorant fishermen at blue hour

Yangshuo wakes inside a bowl of mist. We are on the Yulong River bank before six, setting up where the water runs still and the karst towers stand in rows behind the bamboo. When a raftsman poles a bamboo raft into the frame the scene completes itself — we have a local boatman booked, so you are not waiting on luck.

Late afternoon belongs to the Li River and its cormorant fishermen. As the sun drops behind the hills the sky turns violet, the oil lamps are lit, and the birds work the water in front of the bamboo poles — the classic Guilin blue-hour frame. We shoot from the bank and from a raft, mixing fast handheld frames of the birds with long exposures that smooth the river to glass.

Longsheng Rice Terraces

Transfer north & terrace sunset

A two-and-a-half hour drive lifts us out of the karst plain and into the Dragon's Backbone — the Longsheng rice terraces, cut into the hillside over six centuries by Zhuang and Yao families. We base inside Jinkeng Dazhai, a Red Yao village high on the ridge, so the terraces are above and below the guesthouse door.

Late afternoon we walk up to the Golden Buddha Peak viewpoint — or the lower terrace edges if the group prefers fewer steps — as the light turns gold and the flooded paddies begin to mirror the sky. Between frames there is time for a short workshop on reading contour lines: how to use a terrace edge as a lead-in, and where to place the horizon to keep the layers legible.

Longsheng · Ping'an / Dazhai

Terrace sunrise & village life

Dawn is the reason we sleep up here. Depending on the season we climb either to “Seven Stars Accompanying the Moon” or to “Nine Dragons and Five Tigers” — two viewpoints that look straight down the spine of the terraces as the sun clears the ridge. Mist usually fills the valley floor first, so the peaks appear to float above a white sea for the opening twenty minutes.

After breakfast we work the village itself: wooden stilt houses, drying racks, water buffalo on the path and, in season, the mirror-water of flooded paddies or the gold of the autumn harvest. The afternoon is yours to rest or join an optional hike between villages; we regroup for a second, lower-angle sunset along the terrace edges.

Sanjiang · Chengyang

Wind-Rain Bridge & Dong drum towers

An early transfer east takes us into Sanjiang, home of the Dong people and their covered wind-and-rain bridges. The Chengyang Bridge is the finest of them: a 60-metre timber span with five pagoda roofs, built without a single nail in the 1910s and still carrying the village across the river every day.

Golden hour finds us on the riverbank, framing the bridge with water in front and the drum towers behind, as the low sun rakes across the tiled roofs and the current doubles the structure. As the light fails we stay for blue hour — the bridge is lit, and the village often gathers to sing on the drum-tower square. It is the most atmospheric hour in the Dong villages.

Guilin · Wetland & Cuiping Hill

Mirror reflections & the karst sunset finale

We leave early for the return to Guilin, stopping at the Guilin wetland, where still channels mirror the karst towers far better than the busy city river — a quiet corner few visitors ever see. Midday is rest and back-up: cards copied, batteries charged, and a checkpoint on what is still missing from your set.

The farewell shoot is Cuiping Hill, the small rise on the west bank of the Li. From the upper terrace the whole city skyline is laid out in layers of karst, and on a clear evening the sunset runs gold through orange into a long violet afterglow. We stay on the platform until the last colour is gone, then toast the trip with a Li River beer on the way down.

Final dawn, edit session & transfer

One last dawn for those who want it: the riverside park below the hotel, where the karst hills stand in mist and morning exercises, net-fishing and market traffic give you the human Guilin. It is an easy, forgiving shoot ten minutes from breakfast — and often the frame people end up liking most.

Back at the hotel we sit down together for an on-site edit-and-review session: culling, rating and a first pass in Lightroom on your strongest images while the locations are still fresh. After lunch we transfer you to Guilin Liangjiang Airport or the high-speed rail station — cards full, and with a working understanding of how to read Guangxi light.
