A natural arch big enough to be a bridge, thrown across a green gorge — when the evening sun lands on the stone, the whole span glows like amber.

The Xianren Bridge — the Immortal's Bridge — is a natural limestone arch near Sanwang that spans a wooded gorge like something from a classical scroll painting. The rock is thick and weathered, big enough that a road of trees grows along its spine, and the opening beneath it is tall enough to swallow the sky when you look up at it from the stream below. Local legend says immortals built it in a night; geology says a cave collapsed and left the span behind. Either way it is one of the most striking single shapes in Guizhou.
Photographically the arch rewards patience with the light. Through the middle of the day it is a grey slab in a green valley. But in the last hour before sunset the sun drops into the gap in the hills and lights the span sideways — the stone goes honey-coloured, the gorge behind falls into cool shadow, and the arch stands out in three dimensions. From the overlook above the gorge you get the arch, the valley and the far ridges in one composition; from the stream bed below you get the monumental version, stone against sky.
