The stretch of the Li River between Huangbu Shoal and Xingping is the most famous view in all of Guilin — a wide, slow bend where the water opens into a mirror, walled on both sides by an unbroken line of karst mountains. This is the scene on the back of the 20-yuan banknote, and from a raft on the water it is even better than the pictures: a single fishing boat, a cormorant perched on a pole, and row after row of peaks fading into the haze.
The only time the river is truly calm is at dawn. The water goes still and reflects the cliffs perfectly, while a thin mist hangs just above the surface and softens the foreground. The first sunlight comes in low from behind the eastern ridges, lighting the karst in warm side-light and laying long reflections across the water. With a raft in the foreground, the mirrored bend behind it, and the mountains beyond, you have the picture every visitor comes to Guilin to take.
